The Price of Happiness

by Yan Cong

Huanggang, Jiangxi province

Thirteen thousand dollars is the price of a Cambodian wife for a Chinese man. These commercially arranged marriages are not uncommon between these two groups, and often occur in the village of Huanggang,

in southern China. The marriage is a transaction for both men and women.

For the Chinese men, it’s one of few options to preserve the traditional family value of having a son to pass down the bloodline, in a time when gender imbalance is high, and finding a wife is hard.

For the Cambodian women, marrying into a Chinese family means improving her living conditions, as most of them are from poor villages in Cambodia.
